School of law

About the School

Debre Markos University School of Law was established within the broader objectives of the University. The School was officially established by a decision of the University Senate in 2011.

The School began its academic activities by offering diploma programs through regular and extension programs, with a small number of full-time and part-time instructors. Although the School had only a few full-time instructors at the time of its establishment, it currently has more than 25 academic staff members who teach various law courses.

Over the past 16 years, the School has undergone significant development and transformation. Within this relatively short period, it has made substantial contributions to the justice sector of the country in general and to the Debre Markos community in particular. The School has educated and graduated a large number of students from different parts of the country through its regular, extension, summer, and distance education programs. It has also provided legal education and training to many people in and around Debre Markos through its diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate programs offered through extension, distance, and summer modalities.

In addition, the School has provided extensive legal aid services to the community through its more than eight free legal aid centers located in and around the University, as well as through Debre Markos University FM Radio.

Currently, the School offers an LL.B program through regular, extension, and distance education modalities. In response to the growing demand for highly qualified legal professionals with advanced training, the School has also expanded its academic programs to the postgraduate level by introducing Master of Laws (LL.M) programs. Currently, the School offers two LL.M programs in Business and Investment Law and Human Rights Law. The School is also in the process of introducing additional LL.M programs.
